We are looking for a Senior Backend Engineer to join our Big Data Platform Engineering team. This team is the backbone of our cloud infrastructure, designing gateways for public cloud governance, enhancing efficiency, and leading our modernisation and migration efforts.

 Your Role: Architecting the Future of Payments

As a Senior Backend Engineer, you aren’t just writing code—you are an architect of our global platform. You will design and optimise core systems that power millions of transactions daily.

Key Responsibilities:

• System Design & Delivery: Develop, test, and maintain scalable backend features and services with end-to-end ownership of complex components.

• Cloud Modernisation: Enhance public cloud usage efficiency and support the modernization of our data platforms.

• Collaborative Innovation: Work cross-functionally with Product and Engineering teams to define and deliver pragmatic technical solutions.

• Engineering Excellence: Troubleshooting production issues with a focus on reliability, performance, and participating in high-quality code reviews.

• Mentorship: Provide structure and oversight to junior staff, helping them navigate the SDLC within PayPal’s high standards.

 Qualifications & Technical Expertise

We value a language-agnostic mindset but have a strong preference for Golang expertise in this specific role.

• Experience: 3+ years in backend development building scalable/enterprise-grade systems.

• Education: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field (or equivalent practical experience).

• Core Tech Stack:

  • Primary: Strong proficiency in Golang (Preferred), Java, or Python.

  • Cloud: Hands-on experience with Google Cloud Platform (GCP) services.

  • Data: Exposure to big data technologies like Spark, BigQuery, or Dataflow.

• Skills: Deep understanding of system design fundamentals, scalability, and performance optimisation in an Agile environment.
