Internship Categories and Duration

The 2026 scheme is divided into three distinct categories to accommodate different academic levels and research goals:

  • Category-I (UG): For B.Tech students (Short-term: 1–2 months).

  • Category-II (PG): For Master’s students (Short-term: 1–2 months).

  • Category-III (Long-Term): For B.Tech, M.Tech, M.Sc, and MBA students (6–12 months).

Eligibility Criteria

To maintain high research standards, IIT Dhanbad has set specific academic benchmarks:

  1. Minimum CGPA: * 7.5 for students from IITs/IISc/IIMs/NITs/IISERs/NISERs/IIEST/CUs/GFTIs.

    • 8.0 for students from all other recognized institutes.

  2. Academic Standing: Pre-final year students are typically given preference.

  3. Disciplinary Record: Applicants must have no active backlogs and no history of disciplinary action.

  4. Endorsement: Applications must be officially forwarded by the Head of the Department (HOD) of the student’s parent institute.

Stipend and Funding

Selected interns may be placed into one of three funding models:

  • Institute Funded: A stipend of ₹5,000 per month (for a maximum of 2 months) for top-ranked Category-I and II interns.

  • Project Funded: Stipends provided via specific faculty research grants (as per funding agency norms).

  • Self-Funded: Students participate for research experience without a scholarship.

Selection Process

The selection is rigorous and managed at the departmental level:

  • Screening: Applications are reviewed based on CGPA, research proposals, awards, and letters of recommendation.

  • Departmental Review: The Research Internship Scheme (RIS) Committee evaluates the academic fit between the student and the proposed project.

  • Evaluation: For certificate issuance, interns must maintain high attendance and deliver a successful end-of-term presentation.
