As Newsweek continues to expand its research-driven editorial projects, including globally recognized rankings and data-led reports, we are seeking a Data Analyst to join our growing team in India. This role will play a critical part in building the analytical foundation that supports our city ranking methodologies and broader research initiatives.


Role Overview

The Data Analyst will be responsible for collecting, processing, transforming, and analyzing diverse datasets to support Newsweek’s city rankings and research outputs. This role requires a strong analytical mindset, attention to detail, and the ability to work with large, complex datasets from multiple sources.

You will ensure data quality, consistency, and relevance across all geographies while collaborating closely with researchers, project managers, and editorial teams. Your work will directly influence how data-driven insights are presented to a global audience, making accuracy and transparency essential.


Key Responsibilities

  • Support the creation and maintenance of the rankings database, including the design of data structures and implementation of a master data management approach.

  • Collect, load, clean, transform, and analyze datasets from multiple domains, including economic, environmental, demographic, and survey data.

  • Filter, sort, and validate datasets to ensure they meet the requirements of the ranking methodology.

  • Write and maintain code to transform and manage data within the rankings data architecture.

  • Identify, investigate, and resolve data quality issues to ensure consistency across sources and geographies.

  • Provide quantitative insights to support desk research and expert panel analysis.

  • Prepare data outputs for editorial and reporting use, including tables, charts, and visualizations.

  • Document data workflows, methodologies, and assumptions to ensure transparency and reproducibility.

  • Support ongoing improvements to data processes and analytical approaches.


Main Deliverables

  • Cleaned, validated, and analyzed datasets ready for use in city rankings.

  • Ranking tables, analytical outputs, and relevant transformation code.

  • Clear and well-structured technical documentation covering data processes and methodologies.


Collaboration & Integration

  • Work closely with Researchers and the wider Research & Rankings (R&R) team to validate data and integrate qualitative insights into the rankings framework.

  • Support the Project Manager by providing data-driven updates, identifying risks, and flagging potential data issues early.

  • Collaborate with editorial teams to ensure that data is accurately interpreted, clearly presented, and aligned with editorial standards.


Required Skills & Qualifications

  • Strong analytical mindset with a passion for data-driven problem solving.

  • Proven ability to identify and resolve data quality and consistency issues.

  • Solid SQL skills, preferably within PostgreSQL or a similar database environment.

  • Hands-on experience with data science or analytics programming, such as Python or R.

  • Ability to communicate complex data insights clearly to non-technical stakeholders.

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

  • Ability to work independently in a remote environment while collaborating effectively with a distributed team.
