The Role: Impact at Scale

Are you excited by the prospect of analyzing terabytes of data to solve complex business challenges? As an Applied Scientist at Amazon, you will own end-to-end business metrics and directly impact the company’s profitability and customer satisfaction.

You will build and deploy advanced ML systems that optimize millions of transactions daily, covering areas such as:

• Recommendation Engines: Product bundling for millions of items.

• Fraud Detection: Building risk models to safeguard financial transactions.

• Catalog Quality: Using NLP to extract attributes from unstructured data.

• Logistics Optimization: Enhancing address quality and fulfillment speed via predictive modeling.

Key Job Responsibilities

• Design & Development: Create, evaluate, and deploy innovative, highly scalable ML models using Java, C++, or Python.

• Data Extraction: Analyze and extract relevant insights from massive historical datasets to automate key business processes.

• Production Implementation: Work closely with software engineering teams to drive real-time model implementations.

• Strategic Collaboration: Identify business problems alongside product managers and propose data-driven solutions.

• Maintenance & Automation: Establish efficient, automated processes for large-scale data analysis, model validation, and long-term maintenance.

• Leadership: Lead complex projects and mentor junior scientists and engineers in advanced ML techniques.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:

• Experience: 3+ years of experience building models for business applications.

• Education: PhD or Master’s degree in CS, CE, ML, or a related quantitative field (with 4+ years of experience).

• Research: Proven track record with patents or publications at top-tier peer-reviewed conferences/journals.

• Programming: Strong proficiency in Python, Java, or C++.

• Technical Breadth: Deep understanding of algorithms, data structures, data mining, and parallel/distributed computing.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Deep Learning: Expertise in state-of-the-art Deep Learning architecture design, training, optimization, and model pruning.

• Applied Theory: Experience applying theoretical models within a high-pressure, production-level applied environment.
